CD Review – Eric Bibb – “Get Onboard”

Eric Bibb is back with yet another stellar CD.  “Get Onboard” is a full band extravaganza, made in Nashville, with Bonnie Raitt on slide, and singer/songwriter Ruthie Foster.  This is another fine 12-set CD that shows Bibb’s unreal versatility.  Eric joined Telarc in 2004 with “Sisters & Brothers” featuring himself, Maria Muldaur and blues diva Rory Block.  Later he came out with “Friends” featuring Taj Mahal, Odetta, Guy Davis, and Charlie Musselwhite.  In 2005 he released “A Ship Called Love,” which is my favorite, and “Diamond Days” came out in 2007.  My advice is to go out and buy all 4 of those CD’s and then add this one.  I think Eric Bibb is the finest singer/songwriter on the planet today.  He’s not all blues, but gospel, world, cajun, ska, everything, and anything he wants to be.  This new CD “Get Onboard” is right in line with the others.  With Bonnie Raitt and Ruthie Foster helping out this will be another monster.  I really don’t think Eric needs the whole band thing though.  Give him a stool, a guitar, microphone, and maybe a bass player and he is absolutely at his best.  I think sometimes the band covers him up a little too much.  Bonnie is her usual sweet sliding self.  Thanks for anything she does.  Eric still stands above the crowd here with wonderful vocals and heart felt stories.  The lead track “Get Onboard” is just great.  As is “Spirit I Am” and “ The Promised Land”, and, and, and.......

With his soft velvety voice, and gliding melodies, this guy  is the package.  As usual I found this CD in my wife’s car.  Along with the other 4 I mentioned.  “River Blue” is a wonderful slow tune, and “Conversation” with Ruthie Foster is just great.  Delta guitar, harp, sing back and forth to each other, just great!   Like every Eric Bibb CD the more times you listen to it the better it gets.  Really, really good.  You better have this one.  “Step By Step” we’re getting closer, side by side, hand in hand.

Enjoy.  One Love, your friend............... blue barry
