CD Review – Watermelon Slim – “No Paid Holidays”

Blue Barry – Smoky Mtn. Blues Society

July 2008

After winning the 2006 and 2007 Mojo Magazine’s #1 Blues album of the Year, and the 2008 Blues Music Award – band of the Year, and Album of the Year, where do we go from here?  Well, just keep going up.  I swear this CD is the best yet.  Watermelon Slim, Bill Homans that is, has another incredible blues CD that is just killer.  “No Paid Holidays” by Slim & the Workers is one of the best CD’s to come out this summer.  Blistering slide, heartfelt vocals, and make you bleed harmonica.  A great blues package.  Every blues band in America wishes they had the stuff these guys have.  From the Delta to a cappella with harp, Slim does it all.  We’re talking 14 cuts here and every one of them has something to say.  Rough and tough, ragged edges, raw, funky, on all 4’s, down and dirty blues.  That’s my quote.  Slim has that vibrato slide that just lingers forever.  His voice is what every bluesman is seeking, and the harp has just the right tone.  I’m telling you, this is the money.  I hope he comes to town again soon.  If you are a listener you are in for a treat.  If you are a player, you can get a lot of ideas, and lessons from Watermelon Slim & the Workers.  Better go check it out.  You got a lot of CD’s that aren’t near as good as this one.  Your friend.......blue barry
